A Little Background:

Early in our marriage we worked as resident hall directors at a university.  We were responsible for the safety of hundreds of men and women.

We were trained and trained our students what to do if someone grabs you.

To take our story one step further we spent nine years living and working in one of the most dangerous areas in Chicago.

All this to say we are not naive to the things of this world and we have seen and experienced a lot.

What to do if somone grabs you

What To Do If Someone Grabs You

First you must let that person know immediately that they must let go of you and the second they don’t you must let everyone else as far as your voice can yell this person must let go of you.

What you do is YELL if someone grabs you?  Yes YELL

You YELL.  STOP I DO NOT KNOW YOU GET AWAY FROM ME and repeat that over and over.

Even if all you can yell is “I do not know you, I do not know you!” over and over again it tells everyone around that this is not a parent or sibling or girl friend or boy friend  but indeed a stranger.

In the process of yelling this if you see someone else, you call out that person directly, “You in the red shirt I do not know this person help me get away.”

There are psychology studies that prove in large groups you must directly point someone out and ask for help as otherwise everyone thinks someone else will do something to help and thus no one helps.

Through all our self defense training the main thing to remember is you don’t want this person to take you to the next place.

So you must do all you can with all your might to get away now before being taken to the next place.  Because the next place may be more secluded than this place.

What Next If They Don't Let Go After Yelling

Thus after YELLING “Stop I do not know you” and if they haven’t let go of you then you need to bite, punch, kick, pinch whatever you can to get away and do one thing after another while still yelling “Stop I do not know you.”

I will not go into details as to where to do the things mentioned prior other than say the obvious places or whatever you have access to.

Review:

Someone grabs you, immediately YELL “Stop I do not know you get away from me” over and over and usually that will be enough but if not keep yelling the same thing and you immediately do physical things to get away.

If Someone You Know Grabs You...

If someone you do know grabs you inappropriately then I would encourage you to do the exact same thing.

There is no reason someone should grab you inappropriately for any reason as unfortunately too many things have happened from people you know.

We hope you or your children are never grabbed by someone but if so we want you to know how to respond decisively and effectively.
