Food…Food is a very important issue and big topic because we all need to eat and feed our families, and if you are like me, you hope to do that in a healthy and nourishing way.
Feeding my family while camping has been challenging at times because I like to feed my family fresh food and we like our food to be as “clean” as possible (organic, fresh and made from scratch) and not the SAD (Standard American Diet). Right now our family is also gluten free and one of my children needs to be dairy free as well, which limits a lot of food.
It is easy to bring a bunch of canned, packaged and processed food on a camping trip, but trying to eat a healthy clean diet camping is more complicated, especially if you want meals to be easy and simple like I do.
There are things that I hold onto and things that I let go of while camping in regards to our food. For example, if I am going to make oatmeal at home, I like to soak it the night before to make it more digestible, but while camping, we use plain instant oatmeal that you add hot water too. I still load them up with grass-fed butter and add pecans, raisins, a little pure maple syrup and milk to make them yummy and filling and get some good fat into us, but it is not the kind of oats that I normally use.
There are many recipes and camping food books out there, but many of the meals take a lot of time to make. Some people like to take a lot of time to cook while camping, setting up elaborate kitchens, which is great, especial since you are cooking in the outdoors. But, even though I like to cook, I have littles to take care of, and I personally would rather be out exploring with my family than spending time cooking. So I prefer for my meals and set up to be simple and quick, or meals that we make together as a family over the fire.
I am going to try and fill the recipe pages with ideas for you to use while camping that will be healthy and nutritious for your family. I will also include tips about how your children can help with the meals.
